Getting organised

Choosing a date

add

Our provisional booking system lets you to book your marriage or civil partnership ceremony at the Town Hall up to two years in advance. Contact us on 01642 729004 to make a provisional booking.

Giving notice

add

You're legally required to give notice if you're getting married. We recommend you do this at least 3 months before your ceremony, if possible.

When you give notice, you'll need to state the venue where the ceremony will be taking place. Your notice is only valid for a ceremony taking place at that location. If you decide to change your venue, you'll need to give notice again (at least 29 days before the ceremony).

You'll need to make an appointment to give notice of your marriage or civil partnership. Call us on 01642 729004 to make an appointment.

We have a selection of suitable songs to play at your ceremony.

If you want to choose your own music, please email your requests to register@middlesbrough.gov.uk at least 2 weeks before your ceremony. Your music choices must be available for us to download on Spotify.

add

Your ceremony will include a meaningful script covering the legislative requirements. If you want to make your ceremony more personal, you can also include personal vows or you can nominate a guest to do a reading of your choice during the ceremony.

add

The Register Office terms and conditions explain everything you need to know about cancellations, postponements, and refunds.

On the day

When to arrive

add

You will need to arrive at the Town Hall at least 15 minutes before the ceremony is due to take place.

The Registrar will need to see the couple separately before the ceremony starts for interview, and to check over the information recorded on the marriage schedule.

If you do not wish to see each other see each other before hand, we ask that one party arrives at least ten minutes earlier than the other.

Please ensure that you arrive promptly for your ceremony. If you are late, we may not be able to proceed if the Registrars are needed for another ceremony. You will appreciate it is not fair for the other ceremonies to be delayed because of this. We will however, endeavour to conduct the ceremony the same day wherever possible.

Parking

add

We only have space for one wedding car, which can be parked at the front of the building. Unfortunately, there are no parking facilities for guests.

Guest numbers

add

The number of guests advertised for each room is a maximum number. Please note if you exceed the maximum capacity of guests we are unable to allow them into the ceremony room for health and safety reasons.

Photographs

add

Only the official photographer can take photos during the ceremony, but guests will have time to take photos afterwards.

For data protection reasons, you cannot have photographs taken during the official signing of the marriage schedule.

After the ceremony

add

Once your ceremony is concluded, you will sign the marriage register, along with your two chosen witnesses.

We'll post your marriage certificate out to you on, or before, the next working day.
