About the residents parking scheme

Later this year, we'll be introducing charges for parking permits in resident parking zones. We'll contact affected residents when the charges for each zone come into force.

Residents parking schemes are in operation in most of the residential areas in and around Middlesbrough town centre.

The schemes are designed to keep residential streets clear from commuter and shopper's vehicles, allowing residents to park near their homes and business owners to park near their premises. If you live in a street, operate a business, or own a property, within the residents parking scheme area, you'll be entitled to apply for a residents parking scheme permit. There are 4 types of residents parking scheme permits: resident, business, landlord, and visitor permits.

The residents parking scheme is divided into parking zones. There are currently twelve residents parking zones in Middlesbrough: Zones A, B, C, D, E, G, H, J, K, L, P, and U.

Streets within the residents parking scheme all have signs, and may also have markings on the road. The signs show which zone the street is in, and the zone's hours of operation. Any vehicle has the right to park for any length of time if it's outside of the zone's hours of operation.

Types of permit

Resident's permit

add

Residents parking permits have the registration number of the vehicle printed on the permit. You'll need to apply for a permit for each vehicle that you own or want to park in the zone.

Permits also show the zone which the permit is valid for. You cannot use your permit in a different zone.

Permits are renewed each year before the expiry date, which is printed on the permit. We send out renewed permits by post.

You can find out more in the resident's permit explanatory notes.

Business permit

add

Businesses can apply for a maximum of two parking permits.

Business permits have the registration number of the vehicle printed on the permit. Up to three vehicles are allowed per permit, so you can swap the permit between vehicles if you need to.

Permits also show the zone which the permit is valid for. You cannot use your permit in a different zone.

Permits are renewed each year before the expiry date, which is printed on the permit. We send out renewed permits by post.

You can find out more in the business permit explanatory notes.

Landlord permit

add

Landlords can apply for a maximum of one parking permit.

Landlord permits have the registration number of the vehicle printed on the permit.

You can find out more in the landlord permit explanatory notes.

Visitor's permit

add

Residential properties in the zones are automatically issued with two generic visitor's permits per year, which can be used by any visitor. This includes carers, and tradespeople carrying out work in properties.

It is the resident's responsibility to make sure visitor permits are returned to them by the visitor when they leave. There will be a charge for any lost permits, and the lost permit will be cancelled and no longer valid for use.

You can find out more in the visitor's permit explanatory notes.

How to apply

The easiest way to apply for a parking permit is online.

If you cannot use the online application form, you can print out an application form and fill it in.

If you cannot apply online or print out the application form, call us on 01642 726003.

You'll need to send documentation with your application.

You'll need to provide proof of residence, business, or property ownership (for example, a utility bill, bank statement etc. which is less than 3 months old), and your vehicle registration document(s) or insurance documents. If the vehicle belongs to your employer and you don't have the registration or insurance documents, your employer should give you an official letter stating that you use the vehicle(s) concerned.

If you already have a residents parking scheme permit (not a visitor permit) and you've changed your vehicle, you can apply for a new permit using the change of vehicle online application form.
