Housing for older people

If you're aged 60 or over there are a number of housing options available, from social housing to sheltered accommodation to renting from a private landlord.

The first decision you'll need to make is whether moving home is the best choice for you. For many older people, staying in their own home is a key priority. Middlesbrough is proud of the number and variety of support services available to help older residents maintain their independence. The Staying Put Agency can make minor adaptations to your home which could help you to stay there for longer. Read more about staying in your own home.

The best housing choice for you will depend on a number of things, such as where you want to live, how much money you have, and whether you have any disabilities or mobility requirements.

Generally, social housing in Middlesbrough is in extremely short supply and, unless you already live in social housing and are looking to downsize, it's extremely unlikely that you'll be made an offer. It's therefore important to be as flexible as possible about where you'll consider living.

There are several schemes the council run to help older people move, for example to the seaside or country, or to make their existing home more suitable through adaptations.

Some 'extra care' housing is available, offering safe and secure housing for the over-55s, at Pennyman House and Beechfield Court. There are particular eligibility criteria for this type of accommodation, and not everyone will be approved. Access to this service is via a social care assessment.
