In 2021, Middlesbrough was named as a Tree City of the World. The global scheme celebrates and promotes places that create green space in urban areas, and Middlesbrough has now joined more than 120 cities in 63 countries across the world including Buenos Aires in Argentina, San Francisco in the USA and Barcelona in Spain, and only 11 other UK towns and cities.
By joining the Tree Cities of the World we have pledged our commitment to meet the five programme standards that show our dedication and determination towards planting and conserving trees for a greener future.
So far we have planted 15,000 trees across Middlesbrough and given away thousands of young tree whips to community groups and spaces across the town. As part of our Green Strategy we aim to plant 10,000 trees per year to help create a healthier planet for us all!
