Prevent is a safeguarding process to identify and safeguard young people and vulnerable adults who are at risk of radicalisation. This risk could be from militant Islam or far right/extreme right wing organisations.
Prevent works with individuals and communities in an early intervention safeguarding capacity which is voluntary to encourage them to challenge and resist extremist and terrorist ideology and behaviour. The whole ethos of Prevent is to safeguard those at risk just as we would in the same way as providing safeguarding to those at risk of becoming involved in drugs, gangs or other forms of harm.
Working with our communities is vital if we are to safeguard those vulnerable within our communities and we recognise that many community groups can provide and co-deliver excellent support to those at risk to further safeguard and build resilience against extremist’s messages of hatred and division.
The work of Prevent seeks to increase understand amongst frontline professionals and community members through both training, one off events and debate to myth-bust, break down barriers and increase safeguarding for those vulnerable to radicalisers in our community to keep them safe.
The Prevent document explains the strategy in more detail.
