Specialist training and employment programme

The specialist training and employment programme (STEP) offers refugees support to find employment. The programme is delivered by World Jewish Relief, in partnership with Middlesbrough Council.

STEP helps refugees gain language skills, qualifications, and training. The programme also offers one-to-one help with CV writing, interview skills, finding work, or setting up a business.

The support you get will be adapted to your individual needs.

Frequently asked questions

Do you help all refugees?

add

Yes - although we focus on newly-granted refugees, we work with anyone who needs support.

Which employers do you work with?

add

We work with a range of employers in the convenience food, warehousing, and finance sectors. We aim to create links with local employers to provide the best support possible to our clients.

What if I do not speak English very well?

add

We'll support you to improve your English skills through an ESOL action plan. ESOL means 'English for speakers of other languages'. It's a course you can take to improve your English skills.

You do not need to be able to speak good English to be on the STEP programme. We welcome refugees with any level of English.

Do you offer any training?

add

The STEP programme does not offer training directly. We can find out what training is available locally and add it into your action plan.

How long does it take for a refugee to find employment?

add

This depends on the individual - the more you put into the programme, the more you'll get out of it. The programme uses a holistic approach, which means we look at lots of different factors which can affect employment. This includes English levels, health, caring needs, and more, to create a tailored and personal plan for each client.

How long will you work with me?

add

We'll work with you until you reach the goals you've set.

I'm on Universal Credit, will working with you count towards my commitment hours?

add

Yes, working on the STEP programme counts towards your commitment hours.
