Social Worker: Providing a social work service to adults over 18

Social Care Worker: This role is available to workers who do not have a professional Social Work Qualification and is key to the delivery of social care services in Middlesbrough

BIA: We have Social Workers across our teams who have the opportunity to practice as a BIA, in addition to those employed in our DoLS Team. We have a well-coordinated training programme for those interested in practicing as a BIA.

AMHP: We have a strong AMPH rota, coordinated by our Mental Health Team Manager, with opportunities for Social Workers to progress onto AMHP training.

Principal Practitioner: Our Principal Practitioners support our Team Managers in the management of the team, whilst holding a small complex caseload.

Team Managers: Our Team Managers lead each team to ensure the delivery of safe and effective social care practices, ensuring that our team members are well supported.

Social Work Grades/ Career Progression

Grade I (SCP 22-24) – Newly Qualified Social Workers – undertaking the ASYE Programme

Grade I+ (SCP 25) – Post ASYE Social Worker

Grade K (SCP 28-30) – Social Worker

Grade L (SCP 31-33) – Experienced Social Worker

Probation Period Newly Appointed Experiences Social Workers

Within the first 6 months in practice for newly appointed staff an assessment will be undertaken by the Team Manager.

Probation Period Newly Appointed Newly Qualified Social Workers

The probation period for Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW) is 12 months which is in line with Skills for Care (SFC) Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) guidelines.

NQSW’s will receive ongoing assessment by their line manager / supervisor and the ASYE Assessor.

The final assessment will be at the 12-month end point of the ASYE.

Grade I+  (SCP PT 25)

Upon successful completion of their ASYE, which will have been “signed off” by a Head of Service the NQSW will progress to Grade I+. The NQSW must present their completed portfolio with all documents and evidence completed and signed off by their Team manager / Supervisor and ASYE Lead. In addition The NQSW must present their Professional Development Plan for the following 12 months to demonstrate how their career will continue to be progress through Continued Professional Development.

Grade K (SCP  28-30)

Upon successful completion of their ASYE and a further 12 months of experience a Social Worker can be considered for progression to this grade. There will be an assessment of Knowledge and Skills undertaken by the Team Manager, based on the work undertaken in the previous 12 months.

Grade L (SCP  31-33)

After a minimum of 2 years’ experience at Grade K a Social Worker can be considered for progression to this grade. This grade relectes the practitoners ability to practice as a senior social worker within the department.

Opportunities to train to be a qualified Social Worker

Within adult socal care we offer opportunities for those working within the council to apply for Higher Degree Apprenticeship in Social Work.

Our apprentices are released from the workplace for 1 day per week for the taught element of the degree apprenticeship and also for the 70 day placement (year 2) and 100 day placement (year 3).

We currently have our first Social Care Worker undertaking the programme and ths yeasr she will become a qualified Social Worker!
