Citizenship ceremonies

On behalf of the Home Office, the Middlesbrough Register Office provides an official citizenship ceremony to celebrate the attainment of British nationality. This is the final stage in the process of becoming a British citizen.

Before becoming a British citizen

For your initial enquiry about applying to become a British citizen please contact the Home Office by callingĀ 0845 010 5200.

Citizenship ceremony

When the Home Office grants citizenship, it sends us your details. We will contact you directly, inviting you to the next group ceremony. A private ceremony can be arranged if you're unable to attend the group ceremony. You can find out more by calling us on 01642 729004.

Ceremonies take place in the grand setting of the Town Hall's Erimus marriage ceremony room. They usually take place on a Tuesday afternoon, sometimes in the presence of a senior member of Middlesbrough Council. Refreshments are provided afterwards. You're welcome to bring friends and family and there are opportunities for photographs.

At the end of the ceremony you'll receive your certificate of naturalisation, electoral registration form, and a souvenir of the occasion.

Middlesbrough Register Office is very pleased and proud to be part of your ceremony, which welcomes all new citizens on behalf of HM Queen Elizabeth and Middlesbrough Council.
