The Friends of Linthorpe Cemetery and Nature Reserve are dedicated to the preservation of Linthorpe Cemetery. The group was formed in 1996 and is made up of people from the local community and beyond.
The group aims to preserve and enhance Linthorpe Cemetery and nature reserve for residents to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the largest piece of mature woodland in the centre of Middlesbrough. Linthorpe Cemetery also has an important role to play in educating people about the history and natural history of the cemetery and the town.
The Friends have helped to raise money from the Heritage Lottery Fund with the help of Middlesbrough Environment City and Middlesbrough Council. This has made several restoration projects possible, including new paths, new gates, fencing, and a sculpture, as well as the restoration of the Hebrew prayer house and the old mortuary which once belonged to the old fever hospital on West Lane.
The group provides valuable support with enhancing and maintaining the cemetery and nature reserve, as well as educating members of the public with activities throughout the year, like history and wildlife walks.
